Netanyahu is Waging War on an Unarmed Civilian Population
by John Lawrence
Since the war in Gaza began, has Hamas fired a shot on the Israeli army? If so, I haven't heard about it. Every day the Israeli army shoots or bombs and kills defenseless Palestinian civilians. Netanyahu does this with impunity. President Trump is more concerned with the few people in Ukraine that are killed on a daily basis than with the many being killed and/or starved to death in Gaza who are mainly women and children. If Hamas are down in the tunnels, why is Israel bombing the civilian infrastructure above ground? This has got to stop.
Israel has gotten most favored nation status for too long. The US provides Israel with approximately $3.8 billion in foreign aid annually, primarily in military assistance. This commitment is part of a long-term agreement, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2016, that continues through 2028. While the aid is primarily for military support, a small portion also goes to economic development. Yet, Israel is considered a rich and highly developed country. It has a strong, technologically advanced economy, ranking high in GDP per capita and overall economic development. According to USAFacts, West Bank and Gaza would rank #29 in terms of US aid received, placing it between Moldova and Mali. About $293.6 million in aid was promised for fiscal year (FY) 2023, the most recent fully-reported year. Another $914 million has been reported for FY 2024 and $531.1 million for FY 2025. Palestine receives a pittance in US aid compared to Israel despite the fact that Israel is highly developed and Palestine is not.
The US should cut off all financial aid to Israel and demand an immediate ceasefire during which an international body should take charge of Gaza and the West Bank. Israel can't be trusted to do the right thing in Gaza or the West Bank. Another entity should take charge of those regions and oversee their reconstruction and reconstitution, the beginning of which should be full blown food and medical aid to the Palestinian people. The nations of the earth shouldn't tolerate the genocide being performed by Israel on the Palestinians. Despite what happened on October 7, 2023, two wrongs do not make a right.
